Natala Covert Jewelry Giveaway

Mar 4, 2014

It's time for a giveaway, y'all! Woo!

A couple of months ago I was invited to a fashion show at Veracruz to introduce a couple of new DC designers. Everything was spectacular, but I was really drawn to the jewelry. This isn't surprising given how many accessories I own. This jewelry was different than anything I've seen, particularly because of the materials. Everything looked earthy...but not hippie.

Natala Covert, the designer behind the unique jewelry, invited me to come to her Takoma Park studio for a visit recently.

Having grown up in the area, Natala took some time to travel after getting her BFA in Crafts from the University of Arts in Philadelphia in 2009. She was so tired of metal working by then, she thought she'd never make jewelry again...until she ran out of money and found that making necklaces, while not her favorite at the time, was an easy, quick way to make a few bucks to fund her next plane ticket.

During her travels, she came across a curiosities shop where a woman was selling bobcat bones. Natala says she's always been drawn to skeletons -- not in a creepy way, but from an artistic point of view -- she's always appreciated the shape, look and feel of them. She bought up all the bones she could and began covering parts of them with goldleaf, which sparked the theme of her debut line this past fall.

Having returned to DC, Natala has fully embraced her talent and is turning her designs into a legitimate business. She's been hard at work this past winter working with some new materials, like antique sequins and shattered tourmaline. She also uses bones she finds in Rock Creek Park sometimes, stylishly memorializing local critters.

Natala showcases her jewelry on her Tumblr page and sells some of her pieces on etsy, but I expect her business will really take off when she joins the District Flea vendors in their first full season this April!

And now for the good stuff...

I have three pieces of jewelry to give to three C&S readers!!!

I've got six ways for you to enter, and you've got a week to do it! Check below for entry instructions. I'll announce three winners March 12th.

Natala and I share a childhood friend. Even in middle school, she was so incredibly creative. I absolutely love the bones in her work; I think that necklace is gorgeous.

I also know Natala -- a beautiful and creative soul! Her jewelry clearly reflects this. The necklace... the earrings... I want it all!

Right? I would never dream of loving something with bones on it. She has a unique eye for beauty.

Thanks Heather!

How neat! I'm sure she'll be delighted to know a childhood friend admires her work now.

Mary El said...

Agreed! I don't know her well, but I do have the sense that her jewelry reflects who she is -- lovely and finding beauty in things others might not.
